Opinion: Why ‘Mayans M.C.’ Is A Worthy ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff
(And Why It’s One Of The Most Important Shows On Television Right Now)
Season 3 of Mayans M.C. just went out with a bang and I couldn’t be more excited for the future of the Mayans/Son of Anarchy universe.

Sons of Anarchy went for one last ride in the fall of 2014 after seven bloody, leather-filled seasons on FX. After the conclusion of Jax Teller’s story, fans looked to creator Kurt Sutter for the next chapter of the incredibly expansive universe that Sutter was able to build over the course of the series. At first, there were talks of a “First Nine” origin story, depicting the formation of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, but Sutter eventually settled on Mayans M.C.; a post-Teller spinoff focusing on the Mayans Motorcycle Club, a rival gang made up of Latin American bikers.
Indeed, creating an entirely new show with the Mayans as the focal point seemed like an odd choice. The Mayans, led by Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), have been around for every season in Sons but never really got the amount of screen time they deserved. In the series, Alvarez is ultimately the only recognizable member of the gang.
